I normally have lame excuses for not posting on my Blog, but this week I had a REALLY good reason. I self-evacuated from the condo I was staying at here at 430AM and the general evacuation order came in an hour later.

I have been holed up in a hotel in Downtown San Diego, just going to work and pretending that the rest of San Diego was not burning around me. The wildfires in San Diego has burned 700 square miles, which in my little mind is inconceivable. The winds on Sunday and Monday were whipping around at 60mph.

Remember my previous rant on Katrina? Well amazingly enough San Diego didn’t experience the breakdown of New Orleans. We had over half a million people displaced by Wednesday, the Qualcomm Stadium was at one point housing about ten thousand people (at their last count). Senior Leaders of San Diego mobilized and managed to take a REALLY bad situation, and turn it into a success story.

I am exhausted, I haven’t slept much…been glued to the TV and been in awe of everything. The people of San Diego really reached out to everyone, donations were in such enormity that Qualcomm stadium at one point said, “Please stop, we have enough…!” The say the Reverse 911 was the major thing that saved so many lives…

I read about people who were volunteering to drive up and pick up people’s horses (San Diego if you didn’t know has a lot of people who like to build ranches), school buses were driving to areas to help in the evacuation. It was an orderly evacuation with cars at times not even moving…with the fire licking at their heels. I can’t believe it…what you see on the news, about how great people were in San Diego and the response of the community…it is only 1/2 of the true story. You have to be here to see it.
